Hello friends, i am truely in a sober mood today, so please forgive my serious tone and lack of rumour. Did i say rumour, sorry i meant humour cus i've got plenty of rumours, i never lack those. I am writing this article straight from the hearth so forgive any errors i make in writing.
It seems the current trend in the world today is terrorism or acts of terror on others especially from the most unexpected sources, if not what would you call the attack by the Syrian army on citizens. Terrorism is fast becoming a trend, Boko Haram is busy in Northern Nigeria, the Norwegian shooter recently had a ball, Al Qaeda's waiting in the shadows, pretty much the whole worlds going crazy. This is the 21st century (though the fox of the 20th century hasn't realised) when technologies advancing, the world is fast becoming a global village, the globe is warming, there's global financial crises. There's so much on our hands and all some people can think about is causing more problems.
This articke is aimed at looking at the causes and possible solutions.
HOW IT BEGAN:
In the begining there was Al Qaeda. After the September 11 attacks Al Qaeda blazed the trail for others to follow and follow they did. Although terrorism as always been in existence, but Al Qaeda showed the people a way of venting their feelings and exhibiting their beliefs. Just like a virus terrorism as now spread through the whole world.
PROBABLE CAUSE OF TERRORISM:
Al Qaeda might have brought the initiative but, the seed would have been planted before the 9/11 actions made it germinate.
Beliefs: A man's belief is a very strong thing. Take away religion, take away culture, take away tradition and take away the the future; what will be left to live for, what is the essence of life. Belief can make one man stronger than a 100 men.
The arguement about how a personality is formed nature(by environment) vs nurture(biological factors) are both true. An individual that is brought up in a war torn environment has every possibility of being the violent type, same goes for someone with violent parents/parent. An individuals nature and nurture shapes their personality and personality in turn contains an individuals beliefs.
Al Qaeda is a group that believes they are opposing the enemy of islam, Boko Haram believe that western influence is bad and therefore should be opposed, the Norwegian killer Anders Behring Breivik believes that islam and marxism should be removed from europe. Just take a look at any act of terrorism with motive and the motive behind it would be belief.
Another major cause is that people see it as weapon or tool for getting what they want. Either popularity, selfish interests or also for their belief as i said earlier.
For self gratification and ego.
EFFECTS:
Now that we've seen it's causes lets see the effects.
1) It's a virus: Terrorism is a virus and it spreads, the more people perform acts of terrorism and get away with it, the more people develop interest and the courage to go into it.
2) It causes distrust: Last year a young Nigerian boarded a USA bound flight with a bomb. Fortunately he was caught before the bomb could go off. That event coupled with other events put Nigeria on the US watchlist.
Another major issue of distrust is a religious one. Due to the actions of Al Qaeda other groups, people are begining to believe that every muslim is a terrorist which is a totally wrong. NOT ALL MUSLIMS ARE TERRORISTS.
There are other issues of distrust but these are the major ones. If countries do not trust each other this would affect foreign relations and automatically the economy and other things.
3) Causes feeling of insecurity and fear: As long as the threat of terrorism exists people will never feel safe, a testimony to what fear can cause is the recent migration of people from Northern Nigeria to other parts of the country.
SOLUTIONS:
Now here's the part:
1) The major solution is to change people's beliefs. This is a collective effort that has to begin from the basis of the society. It has to begin from our families, our homes, our friends, our schools e.t.c. All these institutions have to help shape the belief and personality of our young ones before they are released into society. Belief is something that has to be changed before the child grows or we'll have a hell of a job trying to change it when they're grown. Without the coperation of these institutions belief can't be changed.
2) Don't negotiate with terrorists:
This is a policy by Uncle Sam which I highly regard and encourage other countries to adopt. Fight fire with fire not with negotiations.
3) Always act early:
Months before the 9/11 attacks, some suspects were being watched by the security agencies in the US. They should have been picked up ASAP and contained. In matters such as this human rights shouldn't be respected.
4) Bring them to book no matter the cost:
The more terrorists are let alone to roam free the more people take up the initiative to use this powerfull tool, but if they are always brought to book this will discourage others.
5) Collective force and efforts:
Currently Nato is in Lybia currently searching for Gadaffi, America as just concluded their Afghan tour. About Lybia, the A.U and other African countries should have acted, how come it took an external force to come keep peace on our continent (Same goes for Somalia, African countries should help them).
Our collective force and rejection will stop it.
SAY NO TO TERRORISM TODAY.
